Training

Joe Sansone
What Makes Joe different?
Joe has created his own distinctive approach to training horses, called Partnership Training. His aim is to build a real connection with each horse and collaborate with them to achieve their best potential. He believes that only through this two-way relationship can riders truly get the most from their horses. We continually work to make our signals gentler so that our horses respond to even the slightest cues.
Importantly, Joe never leaves spur marks on any horse, his Partnership Training method makes harsh measures unnecessary. As Joe explains, “You could try to control a horse by dominating it, forcing it to obey out of fear. But then what happens when the rider takes the horse home? If the owner isn’t as skilled or forceful as the trainer, the horse often reverts to old behaviors.”
Rather than using dominance, Joe focuses on teaching horses to be soft and responsive. After 30-45 days, every horse trained through his Partnership Training program will have developed the following skills:
- They will trot or lope in a round pen without the rider holding onto the reigns
- They will stop when the rider is not holding the reigns
- They will move forward without the rider kicking or spurring the horse
- They will turn reacting only to the leg without reigns
- They will initiate a turn from the rider simply looking in one direction.
